Canadian singer-songwriter Kandle Osborne has just released “St. Paul’s”, the cinematic second single from her upcoming album. We caught up with Kandle to chat about the new song, her songwriting process, and her musical influences.
From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “St. Paul’s”.
Kandle: This song was created almost as a type of therapy. The instrumentation and musical techniques act as the sonic equivalents of traumatic experiences. A hit of morphine, a conversation with death, a deliberation of the soul. Both the song and video play with time and perception through the use of multiple time signatures, variable frame rates, and shutter angles; a representation of the distortion of time and reality that comes with being heavily medicated and slipping through the cracks of the medical system. Swirling sitars, trip hop beats and a raw, emotional vocal performance; the band and I feel we’ve successfully painted a hauntingly beautiful tableau.
From The Strait: Every artist has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?
Kandle: I find the best ideas come when I’m not looking for them. Often at incredibly inconvenient times (a melody on the subway, a lyric in a business meeting etc ) or I simply tuck myself away in the corner of my little home studio with a reverb vocal pedal, a nylon guitar and my night sky projector and see what sounds come out of me! After all, art is like a fart, if you have to force it, it’s probably shit.
From The Strait: What has been your favourite venue to play? (And what in your opinion, makes a venue great?)
Kandle: I’m not sure I have a favourite! I tend to favour the familiar so venues such as the Commodore in Vancouver and The Horseshoe in Toronto as they feel somewhat like a 2nd home to me and I am a creature of comfort! What makes a great venue? Hmmm good people and good sound!
From The Strait: Who were your musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?
Kandle: My musical influences growing up are pretty much the same as they are now! I have always loved 90s alternative music, I would dance my tiny socks off to The Cranberries and Nirvana etc. I learned to sing by imitating the likes of Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday while simultaneously discovering bands like Radiohead, Portishead and Led Zeppelin in my dads CD collection at 13.
From The Strait: If you were a superhero, what would you name and superpower be?
Kandle: Name: The Golden Reliever
Power: The power to take away chronic pain from all those who suffer… and to turn into a golden retriever.
