UK-based indie rock band The Magic Es have just released the new album, Junkyard Toybox. Filled with melodic guitar-pop tracks, the new album is the next step in the band’s critically acclaimed career.
“After recording our first two albums ourselves we really wanted to work with a producer, someone who could bring our ideas to life and guide us as a band,” said the band. While they recorded their first two albums themselves, they went in a different direction for Junkyard Toybox. This time, they enlisted the help of producer Andy Hodgson (EMI Records, Bring Me the Horizon) and recorded at Orange Tree Studios. “He’s taken our songs and helped shaped them into an album that takes the listener on a real journey,” they said, of their work with the acclaimed producer.
The album opens with the boppy Britpop style of leadoff song, “Hope”. A great way to kick off this collection of tracks, with a bright and positive sound; melodic, hopeful, and accessible for music fans of all kinds. Another standout track from the album was “Running Scared” – a stark contrast to the lightness of “Hope”, this one is grittier, and one of the album’s heavier offerings. An honourable mention goes to “Making Plans,” (conveniently right after “Running Scared” in the track list). This one is reminiscent of Oasis at their edgiest; it’s melodic and catchy, but with enough of a rock grit to make it even more compelling.
Overall Junkyard Toybox brings back the best of 90s Britpop/alternative, with its boppy melodies and stellar riffs. It manages to sound slick without feeling over-produced, and keeps an indie rock vibe throughout.
