Nelson Sobral

Some artists have an undeniable talent, and a stand-out sound that never ceases to impress you every time you hear it. Toronto artist and FTS pal Nelson Sobral is one of those musicians. He’s just released his latest single, “Twice The Price”, an Americana and roots rock track that perfectly showcases Nelson’s unmistakable vocals and guitar skills. We recently caught up with Nelson to chat about the song, his influences, and his non-musical hobbies.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Twice The Price”.

Nelson Sobral: In essence it means to do what you love and to continue doing it no matter what. No matter what anyone’s idea is regarding success is you should always follow your passions because living a life not doing so is way worse than having success in some other endeavor just to make a living…i want to live a life, not make a living.

FTS: Who were your biggest musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?

Nelson Sobral: Otis Redding, Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, The Beatles, Howlin’ Wolf, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, The Temptations, Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters. I dig newer band/artists that carry on the traditions of this kinda music, Soulful Rock & Roll with a Twang…Chris Stapleton, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Black Crowes, Marcus King.

FTS: What first made you want to be a musician? Was it a song, an artist, or just an undeniable pull to make music?

Nelson Sobral:  All of the above plus seeing KISS on tv blending my love of comic book heroes and The Beatles band dynamic into one mind bending, life altering moment.

FTS: What’s the most memorable show you’ve ever played?

Nelson Sobral: I opened for The Trews in a band i played in once and it was really cool to play to a crowd that size but ive also played little intimate shows for a few people that are burned into my brain for whatever reason.

FTS: Every artist has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?

Nelson Sobral: its always different…sometimes tinkering around on a guitar and finding cool little melodies and riffs or humming little things just walking around and recording them onto my phone and working on them at a later date or some cool lyrics/lines that ive thought about or written that inspires a groove or a riff…or i just ripoff an old Motown song or country tune.

FTS: What are some of your non-musical hobbies?

Nelson Sobral: I train Martial Arts every day and i own/operate my own Martial Arts gym in Toronto called “Reign Martial Arts” reignmartialarts.com (named after my first born) I am a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt and I’ve had a handful of pro mma fights & Muay Thai fights.
