Hamilton-based indie rockers Lucky Honey have just released their second single, “Setting Sun”. A modern rock track with infectious riffs, soaring vocals, and pop sensibilities, the new single is accompanied by a one-shot music video that perfectly captures the song’s vibrant spirit. We caught up with Lucky Honey to chat about the new music, how they came up with the band name, and their favourite show to date. (And if you’re local to the Hamilton area, be sure to check out their headlining show on March 22nd at Mills Hardware!)
From The Strait: Tell us about your new single “Setting Sun”.
Lucky Honey: The simple answer would be that it’s an upbeat modern rock meets alt-pop tune with an anthemic chorus and a bit of a 90s vibe – but it’s really so much more. We hope this song will make you sing along and dance like nobody is watching!
From The Strait: How did you come up with the band name?
Lucky Honey: One night, we were all hanging out after rehearsal at a Chinese restaurant trying to come up with a name. We all cracked open our fortune cookies, and mine read, “Good fortune will come with sweetness.” We were inspired by this and started brainstorming names. After about an hour of ideas, Jake jokingly said, “What about Lucky Honey?” And just like that, it felt perfect—lucky, sweet, and ready to take on the world.
From The Strait: How would you describe your sound to anyone who hasn’t heard your music before?
Lucky Honey: Energetic rock with a focus on catchy choruses and complimented by guitar and synth hooks. We’re children of the 90s so a lot of that post-grunge influence exists, but we love a good synth part too. We’ve been told we’d be a good fit to play with The Killers, but I’ll let people make up their own minds in that regard. I don’t think my voice really sounds like anyone else out there, but I’m a huge Depeche Mode fan and I think I bring a lot of that 80s hook driven melody to the songwriting.
From The Strait: What’s one question you wish you were asked in an interview? (And what’s your answer to it?)
Lucky Honey: Question: “If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it for the band?”
Answer: “We’d totally pick the ability to teleport. No more flights or hotels – we could just pop up at any venue, right when it’s time to play, and be able to get home to our families once we are done! Imagine being able to appear in a new city without warning and just play. It would be so cool! It would also be great to teleport for interviews to! We could be doing this in person with you right now!
From The Strait: What was the coolest (and/or weirdest… we like weird) live show you’ve ever played?
Lucky Honey: My favourite show moment was in Ottawa when I noticed people in the crowd were singing lines to our songs for the first time. But a funny story… We played a sold-out show at Mills Hardware in Hamilton in 2024 and some guy in the audience was just wrecked and kept yelling between songs. This guy was relentlessly requesting songs by Ill Scarlett and was eventually dragged away by his friends. But for a time, whenever there was a pause in the music, you could hear this guy scream “Ill Scarlett”. It’s now become a bit of an inside joke with the band.
