Phoenix-born, LA-based alt-pop artist Piper Connolly is making big creative moves at just 15 years old. Her new six-song EP, she’s too much!, captures growing up in full collision: confidence and insecurity, freedom and consequence, young love and betrayal, humour and heartbreak. With the title, the artist reclaims a phrase often used to dismiss girls who feel deeply, speak plainly and refuse to stay within the lines drawn for them, turning “too much” from a criticism into a declaration.
The EP kicks off with “beautiful life,” a poppy, alt-tinged track with a danceable beat, melodic vocals, and slick production. As the song progresses, it builds into a higher, infectious energy. From there, “body bag” dials even further into an alt sound, especially in the chorus. Killer riffs and hard-hitting drums drive the track, while the huge vocals offer an accessible melody.
Next, “unapologetic” takes on a more mellow style, with a “heart-on-your-sleeve” vibe. But “bubblegum with razorblades” (which is a hell of a song title, in my opinion) is boppy, with a massive chorus you can’t help but dance along to. It has all the makings of a mainstream hit.
Self-deprecating and absolutely relatable, “better than this” comes next, with a lower-tempo, more vulnerable style. Then, the she’s too much! EP ends with a personal favourite from the collection, “joyride.” Featuring great riffs and dynamic shifts, it’s an undeniable alt-pop anthem about learning who you are while everything around you seems to be in flux.
Overall, this EP is incredibly infectious and bright, with just enough edge and grit to make it even more interesting. With compelling vocals and an undeniably hit-worthy sound, it feels like Taylor Swift became decidedly edgier and switched to an alt genre. This is a huge sound for someone so young, and there’s no doubt that big things are on the horizon for Piper Connolly.
