Peppermint Moon – “Foxy Friends”
Country: US
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “This song was written and recorded during a week long Covid quarantine after watching a Sex Pistols documentary and too much Fox news. Written, performed, and produced by Colin Schlitt.”
San Salinas – “Red Dress Blues”
Country: US
Genre: Indie Rock
From the Artist: “I’ve been a blues guitarist since I was in 5th grade, so I always enjoy making a blues track. In the weeks before I wrote this one, I had been listening to Nas “Illmatic” album a lot and I was really into the way he tells stories of crime and tragedy in city settings. So I wanted to write a blues song telling a story set in a big city, both visual and dramatic. I was only halfway through the “story” in the song when the tragic school shooting in Uvalde happened, so I wanted to include some portrayal of the way young life can be lost in an instance due to senseless gun violence. I wrote, played, produced/recorded it all by myself in my home studio.”
Soft Top Intrepid – “Mirage”
Country: Canada
Genre: Indie Rock
From the Artist: “A fizzy guitar-pop track with a jaunty rhythm section and haziness reminiscent of summers passed”
Matte Blvck – “Midnight & Angel”
Country: US
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “A song birthed from drums and percussions. It’s a rare occasion that I walk into the studio with the arrangement in mind, it feels as if the song was already stored in my subconscious. We breezed right through this song; you can hear it if you begin to peel the layers off. “Midnight & Angel” couldn’t have come at a better time, we were all facing adversity in our lives.”
Solar Eyes – “Alcatraz”
Country: UK
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “Following the success of their debut EP Dreaming of the Moon, Birmingham collective SOLAR EYES return with ‘Alcatraz’, a stomping call to arms, released on Fierce Panda Records on 5th August. It is the first track to be taken from their forthcoming EP of the same name, to be released on 28th October.”
Black Pistol Fire – “Bad Habit”
Country: US
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: ”Lyrically the song was written for anyone who has ever struggled with finding the courage to seek out their own individuality amongst the pressures of conforming to what others may think or want you to be.”
The Lamaas – “Concreter”
Country: Canada
Genre: Punk
From the Artist: “This song is multi-faceted. Its reality-based meaning involves the discrimination often faced by working-class people in larger cities. Ranging from being so broke that you resort to petty crimes to make ends meet, getting hooked on drugs, to developing health issues as a result of your occupation, Concreter is a ranty, shouty punk rock song about being a broke, young adult in Toronto. On the flip side, Concreter also follows a character (who shall remain nameless for the time) who moves to Toronto from an unknown country and tries to “make it.” Over time, he develops an addiction to eating concrete mix and descends into madness as a result of hallucinations caused by said addiction. By the end of the song, our protagonist has convinced himself that he is, in fact, an actual concrete mixer.”
Alex Mason – “Dark Days”
Country: Canada
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “In mid 2016 not long after having moved to Toronto, I was really struggling in my career and trying to write songs about genuine hope,” said Mason. “I had a conversation with a friend at work about what it meant to overcome failure and she told me that many people pursue something, whether it be a passion or a career, and get to a middle point where they give up, and are doomed to keep finding new fixations and repeating the process, always giving up in this middle period where they plateau. “It takes working through this ‘desert,’ sitting with the pain, being stranded alone, to come out on the other side. I ran home with words in my head, picked up the guitar and wrote this song almost immediately.”
Carbon Memory – “The Only One”
Country: Canada
Genre: Indie Rock
From the Artist: ““The Only One” explores the struggle to prioritize the pursuit of creating music over other needs, relationships and realities. “It’s about negotiating and protecting creative energy in our lives, seeing creativity as something that needs to be nourished. The further you grow apart from it, the further you feel from yourself” the band explains. The video animation for the “The Only One” reimagines this introspective battle as a space voyager’s one-way journey to the centre of the universe in search of something meaningful. On their way, the traveler navigates through deep space, unknown planets, encounters slimy creatures, experiences spaceship technical malfunctions and faces what at first glance appears to be a kamikaze fate. “We wanted to keep the ending open to interpretation. Is the whole experience a dream, achieved self-realization or the result of creative sabotage?” The animated video took about a full year to complete. “Everything was hand drawn, digitally coloured and animated painstakingly using Adobe After Effects. It nearly broke us. The video is as much of a representation of the song as is the final studio recording.”
Woodlock – “Bermuda Sea”
Country: Australia
Genre: Indie Rock
From the Artist: “It’s about feeling lost amongst your peers after listening to so much great music and struggling with the idea that we couldn’t measure up or stand out, it’s about being intimidated by the process of creation and the place we hold within the wider musical narrative. But the chorus is where we find our focus and says, “I refuse to give up and drown in it all.” It was a strange headspace but one that allowed us to understand we always have something to offer if we just give ourselves the chance.”
Tommy Trull – “The Last 3 Days”
Country: US
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “It’s an uptempo garage rock song about dating an addict.”
Katie Kim – “Eraser”
Country: Ireland
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “I have a really vivid memory of writing ‘Eraser’ at around 2am in the morning, straight after watching All The President’s Men. I’m pretty sure it’s not a song directly about Watergate, but the tune and melody began tapping away at me during a scene where Robert Redford, Woodword, meets Deep Throat for the first time in a parking garage. I stayed up for a few hours fleshing it out and mostly wrote it all that night. When it came time to record it, we asked Ellie to come in and see what she thought around percussion and she really added a different dimension to the feel I think. She added an extra sneakiness and playfulness to it, which in turn adds to the feeling of covert operations in the night.”
Gonzo LeBronzo – “Sidewinder”
Country: US
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “Sidewinder is the lead track from our album COLLAPSE ECSTATIC, a song about the restrictions of capitalism being at odds with one’s true human nature, and ultimately an unsustainable strategy for life on earth. Woo! fun stuff!”
Brutus Begins – “Through A Phase”
Country: Canada
Genre: Indie Rock
From the Artist: “Brutus Begins is a project by psych-folk artist Ricardo Temporao. The Hamilton based musician resamples and processes elements of nature, acoustic instruments and synthesizers to create a sonic landscape that blurs the lines between the real and the reconstructed. The songwriting and storytelling remain the heart of a world that mirrors our own – commenting on our vices, ambitions and ultimately our evolution.”
New Friends – “Doomed”
Country: Canada
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “It’s an upbeat and satirical reflection on being reckless that urges listeners to acknowledge the issues in their love lives, smile, and worry about them tomorrow. Featuring vocals dripping with attitude and confidence, New Friends combine acoustic nostalgia with a bombastic, electrified chorus.”
Mount Forel – “Centralia Sceptics Club”
Country: UK
Genre: Alt Rock
From the Artist: “There’s a fire that’s been burning under the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania for over 50 years and may continue for another 250! It started as a waste dump fire before spreading to the coal mine under the town. Centralia used to be a town of 1,200 people but now only a handful remain – & although there’s toxic fumes & smoke coming from cracks in the ground, the last few refuse to leave, even after the local government offered to rehouse them!”
Ocie Elliott – “What Remins”
Country: Canada
Genre: Indie Folk
From the Artist: “JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter duo Ocie Elliot (Jon Middleton and Sierra Lundy) release the title track from the forthcoming EP, ‘What Remains.’ The melody and music for this song came whilst drifting off before one of the band’s first and only shows of 2021. They had just checked in to a hotel (something they hadn’t done, for a gig at least, in well over a year) and had time for a quick rest before heading to the venue. For whatever reason, right before a short sleep came, the song which is now ‘What Remains’ appeared in Jon’s head. It’s a song about losing someone you deeply love and the feelings of trying to get through and live with the sadness and emotion that loss brings to life.”
