Vancouver-based alt-rockers The Wivez have recently released their latest single, “Boy Toy,” from the new EP Boyz Toyz. We caught up with The Wivez to chat about the new music, where the name came from, and the bands they’re listening to most lately.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Boy Toy.”

The Wivez: The song Boy Toy is a commentary on the superficiality and objectification that can come with fame and wealth.

From The Strait: How did the band first get together, and where did the name come from?

The Wivez:  Hailing from the Pacific west coast, frontman Jordy Birch (Pure/Guilty About Girls), drummer Slam T. Hide (The KLF,/Zodiac Mindwarp & The Love Reaction), and bassist Rob Edmonds got together over a mutual love of 60s surf music and punk. What initially started as a casual get together then blossomed into The Wivez.

They first released “Dead In The Middle,” “Havana” and “Baby, I’m Bored” in 2016 on Van City Records (VCR). All of the songs were recorded with a one-take ethos.
“The other day I listened to ‘Baby I Love You,’ the Ramones version, and that quintessentially describes where I’m at right now,” says Jordy.

In 2023 guitarist Bean (from Vancouver shoegazers, Mystery Machine) joined The Wivez, adding a harder edged snarl to the band.
And lest anyone questions the band name, Jordy says “We all have strong women in our lives. The four of us are more like the 50’s housewives – we get coffee together, we drink wine together, we eat Sunday dinner together… and we rock out together.”

From The Strait: Every band has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?

The Wivez: All The Wivez songs come from jamming them out together.

From The Strait: What are some bands or artists that you can’t get enough of right now?

The Wivez:  Drone Mediation Music, Baily Black, Wavves, Dune Rats and The Velvet Underground.

From The Strait: What’s one question you wish you were asked in an interview? (And what’s your answer to it?)

The Wivez: What’s your dream job? Postman.
