Vancouver-based band Slightest Clue has just released a brand new single, “Car Crash Dialect”. It’s a post-punk meets prog-rock track, merging chaotic energy with anthemic melody. We caught up with Slightest Clue to chat about the new music, the best and worst part of being musicians, and what their own curated festival would look like.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Car Crash Dialect”.

Slightest Clue: Car Crash Dialect is our first track recorded live together off the floor in the hopes of capturing a more raw and energetic performance compared to past releases. Lyrically it focuses on writing about the character of Molly who is fighting with her abusive partner and chooses to take her power back and leave everything behind.

From The Strait: What is your favourite – and least favourite – thing about being a musician?

Slightest Clue: My favourite aspects are still live performance and creating songs in the studio together, it feels the most natural and the way I want the music to be shared. My least favourite is the other half of promotion where it becomes less and less about the music itself and more about “content” creation which seems to be a lottery ticket as to what works. As a viewer/listener that medium doesn’t generally intrigue me as a way to get me to listen to the music so sometimes the new style of industry makes me feel like a fish out of water.

From The Strait: What are some Canadian bands you’ve been listening to lately?

Slightest Clue: I’ve been really into some local acts we have in Vancouver like Piss, Spank Williams and Computer. All very different genres but equally talented and put on incredible live shows!

From The Strait: What was the most memorable (and/or weirdest) live show you’ve ever played?

Slightest Clue: I think one of our favourites was playing goose hunt festival in UBC back in 2023. The fest was sold out and the crowds energy was amazing, people were hanging off the outdoor tents and moshing like crazy. I think any show where the audience is giving you their energy no matter the size move makes any show an incredible experience.

From The Strait: If you could curate a festival (with you headlining, of course), who would you want on the bill and what would it be called?

Slightest Clue:  I think if I could have any current touring bands on a festival bill they would be a lot bigger than us so I would be happy to be a baby opener sharing the same bill with acts like fontaines d.c., shame, julie and maybe father john misty as a curveball that I really love! I would probably call it Dive Bomb Fest cause I’ve been obsessed with Falcons lately and think it’s got a cool ring to it.
