Iconic Canadian music mainstay, Bif Naked recently dropped a new single, “Jim” – but that’s only part of what keeps her busy these days. On top of her upcoming album CHAMPION, Bif is delving into the CBD world with a new line called MonaLisa Healing, kicking off a podcast series, and releasing a book of poetry and illustrations. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s currently on an intimate acoustic tour, so we had a chat to learn about her new CBD line, advice to young women who wanna rock, and her picks for Desert Island Albums.

From The Strait: You’ve never been one to half-ass anything, or shy away from being a true force of nature. It seems times have not changed! Along with a new upcoming album, and a new single, you’re launching a new CBD line. What made you want to go into the CBD business and add another item to your already full plate?

Bif Naked: After witnessing the benefits so many of my fellow chemotherapy patients were experiencing, as I was going through treatments for breast cancer, about ten years ago, CBD was on my radar. I knew about it and was always very much in total support that cannabis should be legalized (and along with it, all of the plant medicine products that have gained so much popularity). When my own manager began taking CBD on the advice that it might help mitigate his pain symptoms from chronic back pain, and my best friend’s 83 year-old aunt began to take CBD to alleviate her anxiety, I observed with great interest. Much to everyone’s delight, the CBD was helping them beyond anyone’s expectations! I was a believer!

There was little verification or certified truth, in the bottles found and bought online and in a variety of dispensaries, and it was so confusing to discern which products were actually what they said they were. Thus, we had to create our very own line, to be absolutely certain the product was 100% organic and from BC hemp farms, was non-psychoactive and THC-free, and was in a 100% vegan MCT coconut oil. MonaLisa Healing is the company, and the products, that I have always dreamt about.

FTS: While we try to avoid any gender-related questions on here, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how much of a strong female rock’ n roll influence you’ve been on girls and women alike for many years. What advice would you give to young women hoping to break into music, especially in rock genres?

Bif Naked: For today’s modern young women hoping to make it in the music industry as “rock” artists I always say, GO GET ‘EM! Never stop striving to be on the bill at your local rock show venues, and never give up!

FTS: Tell us about your upcoming album, CHAMPION.

Bif Naked: My upcoming album, CHAMPION, is shaping up to be my most favourite! Out of the (now) eleven studio albums I have recorded, this is the first time I feel like I’m writing songs the way I have always wanted to. I have waited a whole decade to release a album and I finally feel passionate and open to being vulnerable and laying myself bare, again, to listeners. This is a very deliberate effort in the sound and the lyrics, to bring my emotions into the art of the songs. They are deeply personal, as always, and incredibly emotional to write and record. I feel so attached to the material I am quite certain my knees could very well buckle when I perform them on the stage. I can’t wait!

FTS: It’s a tough question, but we love to ask it! If you were stranded on a deserted island with only 4 albums, which would be your picks?

Bif Naked: This was actually the easiest question. If I was stranded on a desert island with only four albums to listen to, they would be:

STAR RISE (remix album) by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brook.

EXCITER album by Depeche Mode.

LEVIATHAN album by Mastodon

KARMA album by Tarkan.
