Ahead of their show at Warehouse Concert Hall in St. Catharines on March 2nd, Niagara trio Real Kevin have just released their latest single, “Sky Kiss”. Showcasing a slightly shoegazier style for the garage rock band, “Sky Kiss” just might be familiar to anyone who is also a fan of Bob’s Burgers. We caught up with Real Kevin to chat about the song, how they combat nerves before a show, and their biggest musical influences.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Sky Kiss”.

Real Kevin: This song is technically a cover but interestingly, we do not know who the original artist is. An uncredited snippet appears at the end of the Bob’s Burgers episode “Bob Actually” from season 7. The song is listed as “The Runs” online which is evidently a fake band name. We heard it and started playing it at shows and it fit in our set so well that we decided to record and release it.

We’ve put some of our own touches on this song but it’s mostly a cover. The band recorded and produced the song ourselves in our basement rehearsal studio and it was a lot of fun to work on. Has a bit of that “wall-of-sound” guitar that gives it a shoegaze sound with a falsetto ear worm for a chorus. We also had to come up with a way to start the song and all come in together and since we are huge fans of “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes, we decided to pay a little homage to its drum intro.

FTS: What are some Canadian bands you’ve been listening to lately?

Real Kevin:  We’ve all been listening to quite a bit of Sloan, recently spending some time rediscovering their first album “Smeared” from 1993. Also been listening to a bit of Andy Shauf, and BADBADNOTGOOD, some incredible stuff being released by them. It’s an exciting time to be a Canadian band.

FTS: Do you get nervous before playing live? If so, what do you do to combat that?

Real Kevin: I don’t think we’ll ever stop being nervous, but it’s a great feeling. We just try to be as polished as possible. Mistakes will always happen but it helps the nerves to feel over prepared and be able to completely let go on stage and just enjoy ourselves.

FTS: Who are your biggest musical influences?

Real Kevin: Biggest influences have to be The Beatles, Pixies, Nirvana, The Replacements, to name a few.

FTS: If each member of Real Kevin were a superhero, what would their names and superpowers be?

Real Kevin: Is there a better trio than the Biker Mice from Mars? Throttle, Vinnie and Modo are everything we aspire to be, including the fantastic Beverly Hills 90210 connection.
