Paste

Known for their uncompromising and charmingly reckless live performances, Paste is a Canadian indie/alt-rock  band that deserves to be on your radar. They’ve just released their latest single, “All That You Came For”, a track with stellar rock energy and big indie pop appeal. We caught up with the band to chat about the single, their songwriting process, and their most memorable live show thus far.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “All That You Came For”.

Paste: All That You Came For’ is a song about dissonance. Its lyrics explore themes of strained communication, loneliness and a looming depression – this forces the narrator to ask ‘is that really all that you came for?’ We wanted to try experimenting with vocal processing to try and find a bit more of a pop centric sound!

FTS: How would you describe your sound to anyone who hasn’t heard your music before?

Paste: We are probably somewhere in the sphere of indie rock – think bands like The Replacements, Sloan, Pom Pom Squad… We try to take a lot of influence from a wide mix of genres, but at the core of the sound, it’s just rock and roll!

FTS: Every band has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?

Paste: Will and I (Dylan) usually write the songs together! Typically I’ll make a demo on my phone or my laptop and send it over to Will. We’ll bounce ideas back and forth for a while and once it feels like we have something cool, we’ll head to our studio and work the rest of it out! I like writing on bass, I think that brings the best melodies to mind!

FTS: What are some Canadian bands you’ve been listening to lately?

Paste: We love Bonnie Trash, Packs, Steel Saddle, The Crime Family, Paul Jacobs, and Cinder to name a few! I’ll also shout out the band’s other projects: Ginger Taylor, Glitter Party, Horse Champion, The Ferns and Blanks.

FTS: What was the coolest (and/or weirdest) live show you’ve ever played?

Paste: We played a sold out set at Lee’s Palace in Toronto and our guitar player Will fell off the stage when he put his foot on a monitor – the whole thing slid off and he went head first into the audience! The monitor actually almost crushed some of our friends, but thankfully no one was hurt! We got an earful from the sound tech, but it was an accident! One of our favorite local photographers (Alex Carre) captured some awesome shots when it happened though!
