London, ON-based band Lost In Japan have just released their latest single, “From The Start” – a track that boasts huge energy, driving riffs, and the stellar alt rock sound we’ve come to expect from the band. We caught up with Lost In Japan to chat about the song, the benefits of LEGO, and the bands they’ve been diggin’ lately. We’d also use this post to get an important message out to Mark Ruffalo, if possible. Hey Mark – your presence is requested at the next LIJ show! And don’t worry, you’re guest-listed.
From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “From The Start”.
Lost In Japan: From The Start has this energy that makes you want to just run a marathon or do something fast. This is the first single for our second part of our next LP “Night Talks”. The single is about uncertainty in oneself and despite looking confident its super easy to not know what you are doing or what direction you are going in. We couldnt be more excited about this song to drop.
FTS: Every band has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?
Lost In Japan: Usually Addison (singer) brings ideas to a band writing session and we jam the rest out. But, recently we have been writing songs in a stripped down way at a writing session. So everyone has hands on the songs and its much more of a collaboration. We started writing From The Start with the drum beat actually and just built it from there. Lyrics were the last part to be added. That usually always is the case for us.
FTS: What are some bands/artists you can’t get enough of right now?
Lost In Japan: Right now we’re listening to a lot of Valley (since we’re opening for them April 20th London Music Hall). We always l have love for the arkells as well. We have been listening to a lot of COIN, Glorious Sons, July Talk & Half Moon Run.
FTS: What are some of your non-musical hobbies?
Lost In Japan: Two words ADULT LEGO. Can’t get enough of it. Think what you want but sitting back with some buds having a couple of beers and making the Big Ben in lego is a great way to pass the time and feels so rewarding once completed.
FTS: What’s one question you wish you were asked in an interview? (And what’s your answer to it?)
Lost In Japan: Good Question,
We would ask “if you could guest list any one in the world and they would come to your show, who would you put on the guest list?”
We’ve been doing this tradition of adding Mark Ruffalo to every single one of our shows on the guest list since 2016. We’ve yet to have him come out but one day.
