Freshly Pressed – Altered By Mom “Sucking On A Lemon”

Canadian alt-rockers Altered By Mom have recently released their latest track, “Sucking On A Lemon,” the first single from their upcoming debut full-length album, Better. Known for their “chaos with a party vibe” style, they’re a band that commands your attention. We caught up with ABM to chat about the new music, their non-musical hobbies, and how they got their band name (as far as band name origin stories go, this one is oddly satisfying!)

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Sucking on a Lemon”.

Altered By Mom: Our new single Sucking on a Lemon is the first offering from our debut full length LP “Better” dropping this year. We had a blast writing this one with musical maveric Thomas D’Arcy at Taurus Studios in Toronto. We wanted to poke fun at the “party pooper” in the crowd. That person we’ve all encountered who shows up but doesn’t engage, with a sprinkle of fighting back against the patricharity in the most fun way.

From The Strait: What can fans expect from the upcoming album?

Altered By Mom: Fans can expect heavy hitting rock riffs, super catchy hooks and lots of fun on this new album. The running concept for the whole album is based on the title “Better”. Whether that’s being better than before, doing better, feeling better, you’re better off. You’ll see how all these ideas emerge as the songs start to come out.

From The Strait: What are some bands or artists you’re listening to most lately?

Altered By Mom: Gina is a huge Alicia Bognanno fan, AKA “Bully”. Her songwriting and how she performs are something she really looks up to. Devon is a massive Sleep Token fan, so much so that he’s been subjected to spending his “sleep tokens” everytime he would like to gush about the band.

From The Strait: Tell us about some of your non-musical hobbies. Boring ones, weird ones, cool ones – anything!

Altered By Mom: This is a fun one! Gina actually volunteers at a Cat Shelter in Toronto. She loves it and has a hard time not taking home one each week. She also moonlights as a Voice Over Actor, so you’ve probably heard her voice already! Devon is a badass music producer and ever-evolving amateur chef, DIY synth-repair enthusiast, yoga fanatic who is kicking at the tires of competitive eating.

From The Strait: How did you come up with the band name?

Altered By Mom: Sometimes we like to joke that we’re all a little Altered by Mom haha. But really Devon was having one of those artist existential crises that are oh so common, and wrote up a resume, his mother checked it over and sent it back titled “Altered by Mom.doc and he never even opened it. He saw the name and knew that was the name of our new band.

From The Strait: What’s one question you wish you were asked in an interview? (And what’s your answer to it?)

Altered By Mom: Question that we want asked: “If you had to describe your band using only wrestling finishing moves, what would it be? And our answer would be: The People’s Elbow—because it’s a little ridiculous, utterly dramatic, and yet still extremely effective and FUN.”
