Toronto-based alt-rock artist DYLYN (aka musician Gwendolyn Lewis) has been on an upward trajectory since her first releases under the name Guinevere. Switching to her current project, DYLYN, her subsequent releases have only furthered her success, garnering high praise from both critics and music fans alike. Continuing her domination over the alternative music world, DYLYN had just released a new EP entitled Heavy; 5 soul-baring tracks that are both gritty and cathartic, showcasing the artist’s depth and range.

The extremes in life make us feel something potent and real,” says DYLYN about the creative process behind her songs. “My life has been all about highs and lows. I embrace it and learn from it and I celebrate it,

The EP’s namesake track, “Heavy,” leads off with a mellow and pared down style, spotlighting the smoky, captivating vocals. What starts off as a cool, summery indie rock sound then explodes into a huge, heavier chorus featuring massive riffs and impressive vocal range. Face-melting riffs shine after the first chorus kicks in, and the song holds its grit throughout. A hell of a way to start this collection of songs.

From there, “Drown” offers a burst of fast-paced energy. It’s incredibly catchy with a badass vibe, and has all the makings of an alt-rock hit. This one deserves to be listened to at dangerously high volumes. Without a doubt, the third song on the EP, “Overrated,” is a singalong track. The infectious and melodic vocals and lyrics feel like a call to arms for women who have had enough of being told they’re being emotional (we’ve all been there). It’s a “fuck you” in melodic rock form.

“Change Me” mixes heavy guitar, shoegaze elements, and pop sensibilities to create an anthemic track that sounds like an automatic radio mainstay. The Heavy EP ends with the fifth track, “Quit You” which perfectly caps off this stellar collection with its swagger and explosive sound.

This EP has firmly placed DYLYN directly into my regular listening rotation, with a dive into her back catalog imminent. Such a fantastic release for any alt-rock lovers who dig sultry vocals, killer riffs, and catchy melodies that don’t water down the grit and rawness. This sound is edgy and captivating, with the right balance of heaviness and emotion.
