Dashed To Shivers

Hailing from Germany, Dashed To Shivers is a band that creates a unique sound by incorporating indie rock, screamo, and 80s synth styles. They’ve just released their new album, Undertow – their second full-length, and their first with singer Sebastian Kavermann. The album features 13 new tracks, balancing soulful sounds with heavier influences.

Dashed To Shivers first started in 2018 as a duo that soon became a trio. While looking for other members to round out the sound, the band decided to add synths to fill the gap, “unknowingly opening the door to the group’s unique sound today,” as the band says. By 2022, the band joined Monasteria Records, a punk rock indie label, and then found their new singer. With everything falling into place, Dashed To Shivers got started on new music, soon releasing four singles, and now their new album.

Undertow starts with “Dry My Tears,” a song with immediate energy, due to its heavy, fast drums and riffs. This has a stellar hardcore sound, featuring melodic vocals balanced by a few impactful screamo moments. From there, “Every Second” offes a slightly more upbeat side of the band’s sound, with a pop-punk/ska feel and a fast-paced chorus. “Undertow” brings back the heavier style with compelling riffs and a palpable metal influence. What would likely be classified as a personal favourite on the album, “Black Knight” boasts feverish alt-rock energy, a great ebb and flow of sounds and style, and some explosive moments of interest throughout. Another stand-out is “Cobras In Fire,” which may be the most accessible song of the 13 tracks–it’s highly infectious, and sounds like a rock radio hit. Another song with a hooky chorus, “No Future” also has “rock hit” written all over it. Those guitar riffs are undeniable. Undertow ends with “Why/Failed,” one of the album’s mellowest tracks. It has a positive feel to it, further underlined by the way the song grows in energy and loudness as it goes on, finishing with an impactful vocal.

Overall, Undertow is a compelling release with a nuanced sound. Dashed To Shivers has a knack for mixing heavier styles with melodic and catchy moments, making edgy and anthemic music that fans can still sing along to.
