Canadian indie rockers The Sarandons recently released their latest album, Drawing Dead, featuring the focus track of the same name. We caught up with the 5-piece to chat about the new music, the band’s sonic evolution, their non-musical hobbies, and their extensive pedal collection…(sort of!).

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Drawing Dead”.

The Sarandons: “Drawing Dead” is an earnest country tinged rave up about carrying on, even when you know you can’t win. We had some back and forth with Bob Rock during the recording of this track and his advice to us was to double down on the chorus, the hook. So with “Drawing Dead” we spend a bit more time repeating the chorus than we otherwise might have, hopefully to positive effect.

From The Strait: For the new album, also named Drawing Dead, how has the band evolved from previous releases?

The Sarandons: We’ve learned to use a bit less paint and to be more deliberate with our strokes. This probably comes with experience and confidence in, what is becoming, our “sound” and was also the approach Will Crann, produced and mixer on Drawing Dead, helped us with. As compared to our last record, Sightlines, this album, Drawing Dead, has a few more rough edges to it and some of that is exposed through less layers.

From The Strait: What are some of your non-musical hobbies?

The Sarandons: We’re into all sorts of things like wood working, softball, photography, gardening and running.

From The Strait: How do you gauge personal success in music?

The Sarandons: We’re doing this because we love making and performing music – everything beyond that, like favourable media, streaming numbers, radio play, etc., though greatly appreciated, is somewhat out of our control. We gauge success by coming up with and recording a track that we can listen to and enjoy. Same thing with live performance – whether there’s 5 or 500 people, we gauge success based on how we feel we played and how lost in the music we got ourselves.

From The Strait: What’s an album or artist you can’t get enough of right now?

The Sarandons: Right now it’s Only God Was Above Us by Vampire Weekend.

From The Strait: What’s one question you wish you were asked in an interview? (And what’s your answer to it?)

The Sarandons: Wish we were asked about what pedals we’re using just so that we could get a complete rig rundown from Craig. There isn’t possibly enough time to answer!
