Texas King

Hailing from London, ON, Texas King are quickly becoming a must-see live band in Canadian rock. They’ve just released their new single, “Whatever You Break” – a catchy alternative-meets-pop-rock track with stellar melodies and a driving rhythm. We caught up with frontman Jordan MacDonald to chat about the new single, how the band came to be, and his current and past musical influences.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Whatever You Break”.

Texas King: This is a song about tough relationships; Family, Friends, whatever it may be, When it’s ugly it can be UGLY. This is the perspective of someone who has tried and tried to help a drowning relationship. At some point, you have to let go to keep yourself from getting pulled under too!

FTS: How did the band get together?

Texas King: We met at Fanshawe College in London, ON. In the MIA program. We graduated and that very weekend we hit the 403 for our first “tour” ( 3 house shows in the same Burlington neighborhood and our first Casbah show in Hamilton, ON.)

FTS: What first made you want to be a musician? Was it a song, an artist, or just an undeniable pull to make music?

Texas King: I was first exposed to music at my dad’s church. I became obsessed with watching the drummer. I started as a drummer from his influence. His name was Stan and he was damn chill. Each member has their own awesome story about music. Phil’s dad taught him how to play bass when he was young and cultivated the love that Phil has for bass. Melvin grew up feeling that playing in a band was his destiny. He would join any band even if he didn’t play the instrument. He’s been a guitarist, drummer, singer, and bass player. An absolute ROAD DOG

FTS: Who were the band members’ musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?

Texas King: I grew up listening to exclusively church music until like 11/12. started off with some Avril, randomly Eminem, Lifehouse, got into Simple Plan, Our Lady Peace, then into like Black Keys, Kings Of Leon. Now I only listen to like female led pop like Ralph, Loviet, Maggie Rogers, Haim, and then occasionally like Foals, Tokyo Police Club, and like Tom Misch when I’m feeling sexy.

FTS: If you could play any music venue anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Texas King:  Currently top of my list would be a place like Red Rocks. The reason why is just cause have you seen it?? It’s epic and beautiful! You know you made it when you get to headline Red Rocks.
