Hamilton-based indie-pop/rock quartet Superstar Crush have just released their chaotic and cinematic new single, “Fire Escape”. We caught up with the band to chat about the new music, their scholastic ventures, and what bands they’re listening to most.
From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Fire Escape”.
Superstar Crush: Fire Escape’s a little desperate and melodramatic. It’s sorta like if you left pop music in your pocket and it went through the washing machine. Heartbreak track. Truaxe (Drummer, hopeless) started the melody from tapping on a plastic window pane to help get over writer’s block and other stuff.
From The Strait: How would you describe your sound to anyone who hasn’t heard your music yet?
Superstar Crush: Kissing your ex at the airport – but like you didn’t know you’d see them there.
From The Strait: What are some of your non-musical hobbies?
Superstar Crush: We’re all in university rn in different cities, gonna graduate next year. Chloe’s studying enviro sci, Marzieh’s in international relations, Truaxe urban planning, and Sam pop music. In our free time we work unskilled labour and watch hockey and twin peaks together. Generally we keep it 100.
From The Strait: Which bands or artists are you listening to most right now?
Superstar Crush: Cameron Winters, mad amounts of Bjork, Imogen Heap, Pulp always, Pillowtalk by Zayne Malik, Destroyer, and a Big Thief relapse, Lil’ B the BasedGod.
From The Strait: If you could play any music venue anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Superstar Crush: Probably Mill’s Hardware in Hamilton Ontario on June 27th AND June 28th. Feel like it would be a good time and place to do an early vinyl release of our new album.
From The Strait: We don’t believe in guilty pleasures at all, but for the sake of a Q&A, we’ll pretend – do you have any musical guilty pleasures (or music you love that may be surprising)?
Superstar Crush: NO SUCH THING AS GUILTY PLEASURES. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds. Also Cigarettes After Sex. And lowkey Superstar Crush (we have the album masters on our computers)
