Back in 2022 when the US Supreme Court made the decision to overturn abortion rights, Montreal’s NOBRO hit the stage and led a toast against the decision, saying “This next song is dedicated to setting our vaginas free!” This defiant spirit is the cornerstone of their new album, Set Your Pussy Free, featuring the focus single “Who The Hell Am I?”. We caught up with the band to chat about the single, their biggest musical influences, and the coolest show they’ve played.
From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Who The Hell Am I?”.
NOBRO: It’s a pretty simple rock song about feeling totally isolated. Also, I think the best guitar solo on the album is in the bridge.
From The Strait: How did NOBRO become a band?
NOBRO: It has been a journey. We all met each other through mutual friends and decided we had enough chemistry to start playing together. It took us a little bit of time to put together music we felt confident in releasing but when we did we were off to the races!
From The Strait: Who would you say are your biggest musical influences, and how have they helped to shape your sound?
NOBRO: Jay Retard. Betty Davis. Royal Trux. The Damned. I could go on…
These bands have definitely shaped the sound of the band in terms of their energy, songwriting and punk attitude. We try to harness their spirit and bring it forth in the music we make.
From The Strait: Every band has their own way of creating songs – what is your songwriting process like?
NOBRO: Song writing is illusive. However it comes it comes. Could start with a riff, a melody, a drum beat or a concept, it can even begin humming in the shower. Whenever the beginning of a song manifests I try to capture it as soon as possible before it slips away.
From The Strait: What was the coolest (or weirdest – we like weird) live show you’ve ever played?
NOBRO: I think the coolest show we have played was probably with a band called OBGM’s. I was a fan of their music before I got to know them as people and when I got to know them as people I became an even bigger DIE HARD fan. So when we went on tour, it felt like a dream come true!
