Game Changer

United by their passion for retro video games and a shared vision of crafting a new musical experience, Game Changer creates “8-bit pop music”. They’ve just released their new EP, Sidescroller, and the focus track, “Just Sayin'”. We caught up with the duo to chat about the new music, how they got together, and their all-time favourite video games.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Just Sayin”.

Flyin’ Ryan – the song is about overcoming the curveballs that life can throw at you
Jumpin’ Johnny – taking life by the reins
F.R. – that there are many new and different things that can weigh you down, and it’s up to you to cut the cord and go with it.
J.J. – The song came to us in the middle of hitting writer’s block on a humid summer night in our arcade studio.
F.R. – we had wasted a bunch of hours playing video games when our manager at the time came in and told us to pull our heads out of the sand that we had to break through.
J.J. – in that moment, her words hung in the air and we blasted out the song immediately.
F.R. – From there I recorded the acoustic guitar myself at home, then we brought it to Highfield studios.
J.J. – that’s where the rest of the song came together, drums, electric guitars, and synths.
F.R. – We recorded all of our respective vocals and then  mixed until we were satisfied with the final product.

From The Strait: How did Game Changer get together?

J.J. – Our paths crossed in the middle of an arcade battle of the bands.
F.R. – Johnny’s drumming caught my attention. Intrigued by the unique fusion of music and gaming I instantly knew my synth and guitar knowledge would be a perfect match, we needed to blend our music abilities together.
J.J. – we speak the same musical language, and we play the same video games.

From The Strait: If you could play a show with three other bands (with you headlining, of course), who would you love to play with?

J.J. – Gorillaz
F.R. – Prozzäk
J.J. & F.R. – The Travelling Wilburys

From The Strait: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 4 albums would you want with you?

F.R. – The Traveling Wilbury’s – Vol. 1
J.J. – Masato Nakamura’s Sonic the Hedgehog Soundtrack collection.
F.R. –  The Very Best of The Archies
J.J. – The Guardians of the galaxy soundtrack

From The Strait: What video games are your all-time favourites?

F.R. – Rampage NES
J.J. – Kirby’s Dreamland
F.R. – Mortal Kombat
J.J. – Ghostbusters 2 (European version) NES
