Dubbed The Dreampop Troubadour by Billboard Magazine after the release of his self-titled EP, Kramies is now embarking on a new chapter and moving away from that moniker. Collaborating with Grammy-winning producer Mario McNulty (David Bowie), his aptly-named new EP Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour wanders through eerie scenery and dreamlike landscapes filled with nostalgia
“The one song that sums up the “in-between” space between the last album and this one is “Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour,”” says Karmies. “Well they all do and they all look very in that place, but “Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour” is a six minute long beautifully frosted cake that I baked for myself – to help uplift myself when I’m looking down for too long. If that makes any sense.“
A semi-autobiographical collection of songs, the EP kicks off with a standout track, “Perfectly Dreadful”. Mellow and moody, it carries eerie, doom-filled undertones and a fantastic theatrical style. From there, soaring vocals are the star of “Social Light,” which, though melancholy, manages to convey a hopeful sentiment.
Up next is “Summer Scurry and Our Holidays On Sunset,” a song that evokes feelings of a cinematic dream sequence, pared-down and hazy. The EP’s title track, “Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour” is an anthemic feel-good track that sounds like a redemption arc in the artist’s personal story. It’s cinematic, atmospheric, and beautifully arranged.
“Hollywood Signs” offers a slight Radiohead vibe that can be found throughout the EP, with haunting melodies melded with layers and textures. As we near the end of this release, “Kite Ropes” provides an enchanting softness before “Between the Moon” closes the EP on a folky and intimate note, with gorgeous dual vocals that create the perfect conclusion to this story.
Overall, the Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour EP does exactly that – it says goodbye to the artist’s previous style, opting instead for a moody and melancholy sound, bursting with depth and nuance (and maybe a touch of humour and light). Kramies has a knack for pushing musical and creative boundaries, adding textures, prog-rock elements, and unexpected scenes throughout his work.
