Montreal’s Les Shirley returns with “PLAYER2,” the second single from their forthcoming album HAIL MARY, out September 25th. Known for fusing anthemic rock with a defiant punk edge, the new song shows the trio delivering a track that’s as introspective as it is hard-hitting. We caught up with band members Raphaelle and Sarah to chat about the new music, what made them want to become musicians, and the most surreal show they’ve played thus far.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “PLAYER2”.

Les Shirley: The song came together so quickly and so easily. It was like it needed to be written. The real question when it comes to relationships is are you ready to put in the work, to really commit? Are you ready to play?

From The Strait: What can fans expect from the upcoming album, HAIL MARY?

Les Shirley: We all agree that Hail Mary is the first album we have recorded where we feel we’ve truly found our sound. We spent months writing and refining these songs, showing up at the studio five days a week, from 9 to 5, to sit down, compose, and explore countless ideas. It finally came down to these 12 songs out of this pool of music. It feels personal, and every decision was made with purpose. Fans can expect a raw, loud, and unapologetically guitar-driven record—no extra instrumentation, just guitar, bass, and drums. It’s packed with anthems and represents the music we’re most proud of creating to date.

From The Strait: What first made you want to be in a band? Was it a song, an artist, or just an undeniable pull to make music?

Les Shirley: For me (SARAH), it was the pull of making music. It started with an acoustic guitar and eventually led me to the drums, and then to bass. I’ve never experienced a stronger sense of freedom or connection than I do when communicating through music, sound, and pure noise. Over time, it became more than just a passion—it became a necessity. I wanted to share that feeling with other musicians and create something bigger, louder, and more powerful than I could on my own.

From The Strait: Which bands or artists are you listening to most right now?

Les Shirley: We just discovered Genesis Owusu and we love him! Courtney Barnett also just released an album and it’s a pretty good vibe for the summer. There’s also a good deal of Charli XCX being blasted in the car lately.

From The Strait: What was the coolest (and/or weirdest) live show you’ve ever played?

Les Shirley: Hands down it was opening for the Foo Fighters at the Verdun Auditorium in Montreal. First because it was at the personal request of the band, and secondly because the venue is so iconic (last Nirvana show in town). It was just surreal, and a true lesson in rock and roll.
