Toronto-based 5-piece indie rockers Madame Psychosis have just released their third studio album, MP3. Following the success of their 2016 self-titled album, and 2019’s Survivor, MP3 stands as a testament to the band’s evolution. The songs showcase a mix of genres, introspective lyrics about the human experience, and serious themes that serve as a personal reflection.
“The world has gone through a lot and we wanted to create an album that acts as a reflection of the times,” says the band’s lead singer and lyricist, Michelle Mondesir. “It is also meant to take you inward, understanding who you are, and then stepping out to interact with the world around you in a meaningful way.“
The album kicks off on an emotional note, with strong vocals at the forefront. What starts off soft as “I’ll Go” then morphs into the second track, “Anywhere With You,” ending with a feel-good, energetic vibe. “Lucky” is the fantastic new single, and then “Hopeless” offers a cool, mellow feel that brings up mental images of a 50s high school dance. A standout track, “Charlie’s Story,” is deep, anthemic, and hard-hitting. Once the energy erupts, you’re hooked in and ready to go on the ride. Following the catchiness of “Concrete Streets,” “Foxtail” starts off with stellar guitar riffs and features infectious vocals that are sure to get live audiences singing along. It has a really accessible pop rock sound, perfect for a wide array of music fans. “Revolution” may be my favourite on the album–this one has an edgy feel to it, and the powerful vocals on that chorus strike a solid balance with the verse style. If this one doesn’t get you moving, you just need to listen again. Then comes “Vulnerability,” a track that lives up to the name with its mellow vibes and depth of sound. The album ends with “Nightmares,” a 6-minute sonic journey to perfectly close out this collection of songs.
From start to finish, this album is a testament to the human condition, musically weaving relatable stories in genre-blended packages. Vocally, Michelle Mondsir has a sound that, to me, can be described as “Beyonce goes alt rock,” in the best way possible. Each band member plays an essential role in Madame Psychosis’s sound, creating something new and interesting that could only be achieved with this exact lineup of musicians. Overall, MP3 is a release that deserves your ears and attention.
