What started out in California as a solo indie alt-rock outlet for artist Derek Silva, dwn bad later became a full band project after he relocated to Houston. With a gritty style and lyrics full of emotional honesty, dwn bad has a sound that embraces imperfection in the age of AI. They’ve just released a new EP, Good Luck Have Fun, featuring six raw yet infectious songs.
Good Luck Have Fun opens with “Try And Try Again,” a catchy and bright indie rock offering that immediately showcases the style and ethos of dwn bad, and a killer start to the album. The band manages to create a sound that remains edgy and authentic despite its catchy feel and accessibility, and “Run Around” is a perfect example of this; so, too, is “Too Late” with a bright, boppy instrumentation that balances the vocals beautifully, and the addictive rock energy of “Liar Lar (Talk To Me)”.
The vocal style on “Nobody Knows” feels more punctuated and emotional, and adds an introspective depth to this indie rock sound. The album ends with “Love On Repeat,” an infectious alt rock track with a nostalgic feel, mood shifts throughout that propel the track, and all-around great energy. An outstanding collection of songs, from start to finish.
Overall, the EP is a testament to real music – raw and authentic, while still being catchy and capativating. Punchy guitar riffs and gritty vocals are the star of Good Luck Have Fun, and dwn bad has a sound that is perfect for music fans who love the style of The Strokes, or a less glossy Arctic Monkeys and Fran Ferdinand. Each of the songs feels personal, and the lack of overdone polish only helps to drive that feeling home.
