L.A.-based rock act Analog Party has returned from a two year hiatus to release a brilliant new EP, Exhibit A. While Analog Party is a solo project by singer/multi-instrumentalist Animaan Pathak, this 5-track collection features notable contributions from Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle, Poppy) and Charles Horin (Post Profit).

This collection of songs is a raw diary of my mid-twenties, reflecting both the personal and existential disorder in my life over the last few years,” says Pathak. “Lyrically, I think a lot of people, younger or older, will be able to relate to the heavy emotions expressed in these songs. Musically it covers a lot of ground, from aggressive heavy rock to more left-field material with moody, ambient textures.

With the very first track, the EP boasts a larger than life, grungy rock sound right from the get-go. Exhibit A‘s title track has a Stone Temple Pilots-meets-Nirvana style with stand-out riffs and excellent arrangements. Next up is “Deliria” featuring a bit of a nu metal vibe, with its heavy, aggressive guitars. This is the perfect example of what you’d hear on the radio in the mid-to-late 90s, which is sure to appeal to our Gen X and elder millennial readers, as well as the younger generation that is currently discovering the sound and bringing it back to popularity.

“Snake Oil” is yet another dynamic alt rock song, introducing a slight shoegazey effect and layered sounds. “Replica” then dives even further into the shoegaze style, with an alt metal twist. The heavy guitars and vocal style showcase a stellar intensity, with melodic moments and complex stacking that bring a perfect balance to the song. The EP ends with “Can I With You?,” a song that has an infectious Foo Fighters vibe, but with a deeper, more haunting and nuanced sound.

As a whole, Analog Party’s Exhibit A EP is an alt rock gem, with each song offering something a little different and unique, but all working together to create a cohesive collection. The sound is grungy and gritty, with raw, expressive vocals, evoking nostalgic feelings in the best way. It’s ethereal and haunting yet bold and intense; fuzzy and distorted, but packed with swirling melodies. Don’t sleep on this one, it may just be your new favourite.
