The Vaniers

Toronto indie rock trio The Vaniers have just released the 5th single from their debut EP – “Dance to Forget” is a song with a “catchy riff, a solid groove and powerful yet emotional vocals”. We caught up with the band to chat about the new music, their favourite Canadian bands, and what’s up next for The Vaniers.

From the Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Dance to Forget”

The Vaniers: Dance to Forget is a quintessential indie-rock tune: catchy, melodic, and full of adolescent emotion. It’s a song about smiling through the pain— a universal feeling that we’re sure every listener will be able to connect with in some way. We came up with this one at the beginning of the pandemic, so we’ve had this one in the locker for a while now. We’re totally pumped to kick off 2022 with the release of this new tune.

FTS:How would you describe the Vaniers sound to anyone who has never heard your music before?

The Vaniers: Picture a cocktail of your favourite indie-alternative bands from the early-mid 2000s, and you’ve got the Vaniers. Our sound is fresh but familiar—we’ve been influenced by some of our favourite bands like the Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, and we think that you can hear this influence in our sound.

FTS:What are some of your all-time favourite Canadian bands?

The Vaniers: Oh, man. That’s a tough one. Canada has always had a vibrant music scene, full of talented musicians and incredible lyricists. If we were gonna pick some of our favourites it would have to be Rush, Black Pistol Fire and of course the Hip. RIP Gord.

FTS: If you could tour with any band (any genre) who would it be and why?

The Vaniers: When (not if, when) Oasis get back together, we would want to tour with them. Not only are we lifelong fans of Oasis, but we’re 100% certain that the hijinks we would get into with them on the road would become the stuff of rock legend. Liam, if you’re reading this: sign us up!

FTS: What’s up next for you?

The Vaniers:  Glad you asked. 2022 is poised to be a massive year for the band. We have a couple more singles that we will be releasing to follow up Dance to Forget, and of course in the Spring we will be releasing our full-length debut LP. We’ve been working on this for a long time and can’t wait to share it with you. On top of the new music releases, we are excited to be getting back to playing live music. Our favourite place on earth is whatever stage we’re on, and so the last two years have been really difficult for us with the pandemic limiting our opportunities to play live. We have a lot of time to make up, so we’re going to be hitting the road this summer and giving our fans in cities all across Canada a chance to see us live. We encourage everyone to follow our social media platforms to stay up-to-date with all things Vaniers.
