Toronto-based band Arenas has just released their debut album Truth Come Alive, featuring the recent single “All The Best Ones”. The album offers a fresh take on indie and alternative rock, showcasing the band’s maturity and growing confidence. We caught up with Arenas to chat about the new album, their musical influences, and their dream music venue.
From The Strait: Tell us about the new album, Truth Come Alive.
Arenas: Truth Come Alive is our debut LP, it covers themes of personal growth and introspection. It’s full of old songs Michael wrote by himself and new songs where everyone had a hand in the process. The whole project feels like a coalescence of our individual inspirations. We think there’s something for everyone on the album, and are proud of how it works together to form an entire 35 minute idea. We hope you connect with the songs!
From The Strait: How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before?
Arenas: Our sound is driven by punchy guitars and introspective lyrics. We strive to make tunes that attach to specific listeners for various reasons, rather than trying to serve the masses with pop hits.
From The Strait: Who were your musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?
Arenas: Growing up we all had different influences (as we’re mostly from different places in the world) Kelly grew up in Toronto, and was a fan of bands like Pavement and Pixies, Camila grew up in Santiago, Chile and was a fan of Paramore and some more hard rock bands, and Chris and Michael are brothers that grew up in Winnipeg idolizing the Weakerthans and Neil Young. They’ve changed now to include so many genres from Hip Hop, to Jazz, Metal, and so much more. The bands and musicians we grew up loving are still amazing, but it’s fun to expand your palate as you grow up. Exploring new music is one of the best experiences available in life! My favourite band currently has to be Ratboys out of Chicago, they are next level amazing.
From The Strait: If you could play any music venue anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Arenas: The Burt in Winnipeg – the Burton Cummings theatre in Winnipeg is a massive beautiful old staple of the Winnipeg art and music scene. Not only is it a gorgeous venue I’ve seen multiple great music and comedy acts in, but it would be a huge career notch to say to myself. I have a tonne of reverence for many of Toronto’s iconic venues, but connecting with back home in this way would be a huge highlight for myself personally.
From The Strait: Imagine you were selling out stadiums (or, in this case, arenas!) – what would you put on your rider?
Arenas: If we were lucky enough to have a rider for our sold out stadium/arenas show I would definitely put like a bunch of candies on there, maybe some hypoallergenic cats to hang out in the green room. Does that sound like a 13 year old answered this? My go to’s were candies and cats, I’m not sure I should be trusted with a rider yet. I feel like I could just lock the rest of the band in a room with a bunch of pedals and they’d be happy as clams in there, I’d just be hanging out with Mittens and some Mike & Ike’s.
