Niagara-based musician THUNDERCLAP! has just released his latest single, “Forced to Walking,” alongside a new film-style video created via footage from a movie he was filming in 2007. We caught up with THUNDERCLAP! to chat about the new song, what he enjoys most about performing live, and how he gauges personal success in a tough business like the music industry.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Forced To Walking”.

THUNDERCLAP!:   The song came about one winter years ago when I was walking around  in the back parking lot of a mall in Niagara Falls, Ontario. I was feeling lonely  & thinking about my life. The cloudy melancholy sunset was coloured in very peculiar hues of browns, bronzes, and greys (as mentioned in the song). Right there & then I was compelled enough to scribble down the moment. . . hours later I found myself walking around on some back roads further contemplating what these feelings were all about, walking and thinking, thinking and walking.

It was only a month after I wrote the song where I Assembled the proper musicians and studio engineer to record in my personal workshop on Queen Street and Niagara Falls. It all came together pretty quickly, and it was the first time I worked with a standup bass player, violinist and even a French horn player that I recently met during that time while she was working in a local shoppers drug Mart.

From The Strait: What was your most memorable live show to date? What do you enjoy most about performing live?

THUNDERCLAP!: Performing as the opening act for 2 Tony Robbins performances & film screenings in Traverse City, Michigan. In regards to my live shows, I enjoy being in the moment, getting intertwined with the energy of the audience, working with them & surprising them with whatever it is that I do, leaving them perplexed and entertained.   How would you like a music fan to feel, after listening to your songs?  I want them to feel anything, transported and swept up within my genuine efforts.

From The Strait: How do you gauge personal success in music?

THUNDERCLAP!: In this crazy, unpredictable, infuriating & what seems to be a virtually unreachable music industry, I can only satisfy my own sense of quality & craftsmanship. And in the end, if one person or many persons enjoy it, well, that’s the cherry on the Sundae. HEY, wait, I think a bird just shit in my whip cream. (I proceed to eat the sundae)

From The Strait: If you could play any music venue anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

THUNDERCLAP!: I don’t care where I play, big or small, as long as there’s a healthy audience present.
