Scottish alt rock four-piece SUNDRAWN blends soaring guitars, immersive soundscapes, and heart-wrenching lyricism to create a sound that is both heavy and atmospheric. The band has just released the debut EP, Recovery – four songs that are layered with ambient textures, intricate melodies and intense heavy moments. Across the tracks, the EP explores the monotony of life, wistful nostalgia, codependency, and insular living.
“Recovery is quite literally the recovery of our love of music, both writing and performing,” the band says about the new EP. “We purposely took everything slowly and took steps back to look at what we were doing.
“Dynamic changes in music is something that we all really enjoy. Getting these right was so important as if you don’t get the change from that solo guitar part to instant full band and backing instruments right, it just doesn’t sound powerful enough, but at the same time you don’t want it to be jarring to the listener.”
The EP kicks off with “The Constant,” a layered and textured track that wastes no time dialling in to high intensity, complete with huge drums and incredible riffs. The abrupt ending is a surprisingly perfect fit for the song. Next is “Smell The Rain” which was the band’s debut single. The emotion in this one is palpable, and while the track carries a heaviness, the melodies soften those edges. The last seconds of the song are especially packed with feeling.
From there,”23″ is a personal favourite and a notable standout on the EP with its heavy shoegaze feel, particularly in the opening, and melodic vocals that balance it out. This one is so thoughtfully crafted. The EP ends with “See You,”which begins as the EP’s most restrained offering before evolving into a wall of layered, textured post-hardcore sounds. It evokes the a style reminiscent of Deftones while standing out on its own: layered, textured, intricate, yet chaotic.
Overall, the Recovery EP is packed with heavy moments, and lots of intensity and depth. The talent is evident in each song, with an almost tortured feeling throughout, underlining the depth of the artists and their skill. Atmospheric, heavy, melodic, and dynamic – SUNDRAWN has struck sonic gold with this engaging release.
