Oklahoma city indie rockers Blueprint Tokyo have just released their six-song EP, Dark New Days. The EP is a follow-up to their full-length released just last year, and shows a more emotionally direct path for the band, while blurring the line between analog warmth and digital edge.
“We didn’t sit down to make a record about any one thing,” says band member Andy Hale. “We made six songs that felt true and somewhere in the process realized they were all pulling in the same direction— that in-between space where you’re still moving and you don’t know yet how it lands. Every song on this record is about staying in something. A relationship, a feeling, a decision you made when things were harder. Not because you’re stubborn. Because you actually believe it. That’s a different thing and I think people can hear the difference.”
The EP kicks off with “Orange Tiger,” a previous single for the band. This song is catchy, punchy, and moody in all the right ways. The vocal depth balances beautifully with the intricate drums and guitar riffs. Next, “Here’s Your Story” delivers a solid mix of high energy alt-rock juxtaposed with more subdued moments that really make this a captivating track.
Another single, “Just Repeat Myself”, opens in a mellower, more atmospheric direction. But once the energy kicks in (and it does) the guitars create a killer hook, leading into an infectious, singalong-worthy chorus. For accessible indie rock, look no further than “Change My Mind.” The track is packed with standout musical moments that leave an indelible mark on the listener. “Art of Betrayal” feels tailor-made for mainstream radio with its easy-listening style, before the EP concludes with “Nite Valerie”. Poppy electronic notes underscore the indie tune, adding an almost new wave-inspired spin to the band’s sound.
Overall, this collection of songs features a stand-out vocal delivery, incredible guitar riffs, and a radio-friendly indie rock style with just the right amount of grit. Plus, the synths are a perfect added touch to create something a little different than your average indie rock. The end result is polished without sacrificing rawness, meaning, or emotional depth.
