Halifax-based alt five-piece Montgomery Night have a unique style that can be described as a cross between post grunge and adult contemporary. They’ve just released their debut EP, IO, named after Jupiter’s moon – a fitting symbol for the energy behind this fully independent release.
“We’re super proud of our ability to self-fund this project through door splits and T-shirt sales,” says Eric, drummer for the band. “We love the DIY scene in Halifax Nova Scotia and are committed to helping grow the community through music.”
Melodic vocals and a pared-down guitar style kick off the EP with “Trigger,” turning up the grit and alt-sound as the chorus comes in. Catchy riffs and a bluesy undercurrent create a compelling start to the release. Hooky and a bit moody, “Nave” is a catchy song with depth – the vocals shine here, layered and melodic. The guitar breakdown is outstanding, creating a frenetic moment in the middle of the song’s somber tone. From there, we have an absolute stand-out track with “Gravity,” balancing gorgeous vocals with explosive guitar work. Mixing genres in the best way possible, this is a huge rock song, with the makings of a glossy indie/alt pop hit. “Linger” is a beautiful and emotional piece, heartfelt and wistful. The band showcases such depth in this song, it’s hard to listen and not feel something. The EP ends with “Million Miles,” similar in style to “Linger” with its vulnerable delivery and emotions laid bare, it’s the perfect way to close out these five tracks.
Overall, IO is a collection of songs that prove alternative music can be accessible and emotionally raw. Powerhouse vocals from Reagan Mae Kuzyk matched with impressive guitar, plus songwriting that finds the perfect balance of different genres and sounds. Though it’s the debut EP, IO shows that Montgomery Night is a band to watch, carving out a new niche in Canadian music.
