Toronto-based musician Adam Platek is an artist who writes music for the heartbroken, the hopeful, and the nocturnal. His solo project, MISSING PET, fuses indie rock with synthpop and electronic textures, crafting a sound that is both deeply personal and mysteriously otherworldly. He has just released a new 5-song EP, Moon Rules, written after a near-death cycling accident left him barely breathing beneath a wide, silent sky. That night, under the glow of a full moon, something saved him.

Moon Rules was born out of a moment when I stood on the edge of life—when breath, time, and everything I thought I knew nearly slipped away,” says the artist behind MISSING PET, Adam Platek. “In that darkness, I felt something vast and otherworldly pull me back. Not a voice, not a vision, but a presence: the moon. Cold, calm, and impossibly far, yet somehow nearer to me than anything else in that moment. This album is a conversation with that experience—an offering to the force I believe intervened to save me. The moon, as I came to understand it, wasn’t just a celestial object or a poetic metaphor. It became a guardian. A ruler. A witness. Something beyond that saw me, chose me, and decided….. Not yet.”

After his accident, Adam began to notice life moving in cycles, much like the phases of the moon. Using that experience and newfound understanding, he created the Moon Rules EP as a testament to resilience, reflection, and the quiet magic of letting yourself begin again.

The EP begins with “Broad Daylight,” and kicks off with an engaging intro, compelling acoustic riffs, and perfectly placed layers of sound. With its great energy and catchy ending, this is an intriguing start to this collection of songs. Then, with a stylistic shift moving more toward a danceable 80s groove, “Secret Admirer” hones in on a new wave dynamic that is familiar yet refreshing.

Next, we pivot again – this time to an industrial sound, chock full of moody intensity, layers and textures, and a grit that is palpable; “Bitey” more than lives up to its title. “Floodgates” offers a somewhat similar vibe to the previous track, but with a catchiness that hooks into listeners in an almost surprising way.  “Over It” closes out the Moon Rules EP with an indie rock flair, compelling background vocal layers, and sound effects that add something new and unexpected to an infectious song, creating a theatrical epic.

Overall, the Moon Rules EP is a testament to the human spirit and the freedom of beginning again. Swirling layers of synthy alt-pop and indie rock create a sound that is hypnotic, at times unsettling, and incredibly unique. It’s such a personal collection of songs, weaving a profound story.

This is not just music,” says Adam Platek. “It’s a survival story told in sound. It’s a tribute to what hovers above us and within us. It’s a reminder that even at your lowest point, something greater might be watching—ruling—not to control, but to protect.

Moon Rules is both a thank you and a reckoning. I made it because I’m still here.
