Montreal-based hard rock power trio Midnight Crawl has just released their second EP, entitled Love Songs For Deadbeats. Recorded at The Freq Shop with the help of Dave Traina and Tom Shemer of The Damn Truth, the songs stay true to the band’s ethos of “heavy-but-fun,” ranging from hard-hitting psychedelic stoner rock, to catchy, robotic post-punk.

We feel This EP really sums up what excites us about the project,” says the band. “That it can feel fun and cheeky and sorta dumb-on-purpose, but still dark and heavy and a little dangerous.

Love Songs For Deadbeats kicks off with killer energy right out of the gate. “Monkey Pump” and its huge riffs help the song achieve a garage rock-meets-alt punk sound, with a touch of classic stoner rock. Put all of that together, and you have an opener that locks you in. From there, “The Stray” and “Misery Makeout” add post-punk style to the genre-blend, with the latter including explosive instruments in the chorus to balance the punctuated spoken word verses. “Wicked Wednesday” is a head bopper, full of swagger and nasty groove. The last song, “The Wolf is Watching,” is extra gritty, with raw rock riffs and fuzzy vocals, it ends the EP on a huge note.

Overall, this EP grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until it’s over. For me, it draws a comparison to earlier Queens of the Stone Age albums in the best way possible, when they were a bit weirder and took more sonic risks. The unique dark style and fun vibes pay off in dividends here – it’s a memorable collection of songs, nothing cookie cutter about it. Doomy, gritty, and chaotic, but packed with enough melody that you can’t help but get hooked. So listen up and get hooked.
