Marlene Oak

Stockholm-based singer songwriter Marlene Oak is known for her ability to connect with audiences, especially during her live performances. She has just released her new EP, entitled Big Time, featuring four new songs that showcase a range of emotions, vulnerability, and her evolution as an artist.

Writing these songs helped me navigate one of the darkest periods of my life,” says Marlene about the EP. “I went through a psychosis, where the line between reality and fantasy became blurred.

The track listing starts off with the powerful song “Big Time,” which the EP is named for. Impressive, impactful vocals shine here, matched perfectly with the beautiful simplicity of the acoustic guitar and instrumental swells. Next is “Burning Flame,” which may be my personal favourite on the EP. It is incredibly catchy, with great energy and hook-filled instrumentation. The vocal style in this song is impeccable, and the song itself is so layered and nuanced. “Red Clouds” is a mellower offering, with the vocals and piano as the stand-out stars of the song. Big Time concludes with “Until Morning Comes,” the only track on the four-song EP that was not previously released as a single. There is such depth to this song, the emotion is palpable and every note lands right where it should. It’s a beautiful, satisfying way to finish this release, as it feels like a culmination of the previous songs and features Marlene at her best and most vulnerable.

Overall, the Big Time EP is a wonderful testament to Marlene Oak’s fantastic vocal abilities, and strong songwriting. Each song tells a different story, using an array of styles and moods, with the focus never wavering from her musical talents.
