There seems to be no stopping Lauren Ash on her current rockstar journey. While she continues to capture audiences through her acting career (especially as her character Dina on Superstore), she’s been hard at work making a name for herself as a singer and songwriter as well. She’s just released her cover of “The Scratch” by 7 Year Bitch, citing it as the song that made her first want to make music.
“I remember the exact moment I knew I wanted to be in a band,” says Lauren. “I was a kid watching the 1995 movie “Mad Love” starring Drew Barrymore. There was a scene in the movie where an all female punk band played an entire song. I had never seen women perform like that and I knew immediately that’s what I wanted to do. The song was “The Scratch” by 7 Year Bitch and this is my cover of that song. This is raw, messy, aggressive, straight up punk rock. My vocals were literally done in one take. I hope I did them proud!“
While we don’t feature a lot of cover songs on FTS, this is one I couldn’t ignore. As a woman whose formative years were the 90s and my tastes still sit firmly (ok, ok, stubbornly) within that era, Lauren Ash’s take on the 7 Year Bitch song scratches a very specific itch, pun absolutely intended. While adding her own spin, she’s kept the grit, maintained the message, and ensured the song’s rawness is alive and well. Turn this one way up.
