The Mysterines

Liverpool-based alt-rock band The Mysterines have just released their sophomore album, Afraid of Tomorrows. It’s a deeper and darker sound than their debut album, showcasing the band’s evolution and maturity. Ahead of their newly-announced North American tour, we caught up with The Mysterines to chat about the new music, the bands they’ve been listening to lately, and the band members’ superhero alter egos.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new album, Afraid of Tomorrows.

The Mysterines: The album was recorded in LA with John Congleton, but we wrote it in the middle of nowhere, usually in the dead of night. It’s deeper and darker than our debut record, but the natural direction to take as we’ve grown as a band.

From The Strait: Which of the 12 tracks on the album are your personal favourites and why?

The Mysterines: “Jesse You’re A Superstar” and “So Long.” They’re probably the biggest departure from the usual Mysterines sound, and are a good representation of where we are as a band.

From The Strait:  What was the coolest (and/or weirdest) live show you’ve ever played?

The Mysterines:

Coolest – Pier 17, New York
Weirdest – Secret Garden Party

From The Strait: Who were your musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?

The Mysterines: We all listen to an array of music and our influences are constantly changing but we still R E S P E C T all the music we were brought up on, especially Aretha Franklin.

From The Strait: What’s one band or artist you can’t get enough of right now?

The Mysterines:

Lia – Electrelane
Paul – Divorce
Callum – Willie J Healey
George – Brittany Howard

From The Strait: If each member of The Mysterines was a superhero, what would their name and superpower be?

The Mysterines:

Lia – Sparklecat – Can go invisible when she holds her breath.
Paul – Crillerpillar – Can turn into a human caterpillar. Half man half pillar.
George – FavBean – Shoots beans out of fingers.
Callum – The Crab – Can grow extra limbs. Can get quite sleepy though.
