Based in Whitehorse, Yukon, Electric Lemonade is a Canadian fuzz-rock power trio comprised of Sarah Murphy (she/her) on vocals/guitars, Hannah Mazurek (they/them) on vocals/bass, and Rob Jones (he/him) on drums. With songs centred around killer vocals, huge guitar riffs and syncopated grooves, their sound swells with raucous garage rock energy.  They’ve just released their latest single, “You’re Watching Me,” a song packed with danceable hooks, relatable lyrics, and a reminder to get out of your own way. We caught up with Electric Lemonade to chat about the new music, their favourite (and least favourite) parts of being musicians, and their deserted island album picks.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “You’re Watching Me”.

Sarah: “You’re Watching Me” is a break-up song. It’s about being ready to move on, and about embracing who you are – even the messy bits and the mistakes you make along the way. It was inspired by some major changes that happened in my life. I realized I was in a pattern of allowing myself to be in situations where I couldn’t really thrive or be myself.

We wrote this one in the studio when we were working on our upcoming EP. It started out with a version of the lyrics and some musical ideas we had floating around for a while. We came up with a rough version to play for our producer (Jordy Walker) and tweaked it a bunch, but really the bulk of the song was written over one jam session.

From The Strait: What is unique about the single?

Hannah: It’s got some really cool textures riding over a fun groove. So you can bop out and go “ooh, what was that noise?” at the same time. There are surprising little sounds and colours that pop out all over this album.

From The Strait: What sets Electric Lemonade apart as a band?

Hannah: Our members come from really diverse backgrounds and we all have varied interests. Because of this I feel like our music tends to resist some of the tropes of indie rock and we incorporate influences from all over the musical map.

From The Strait: If you could play a show with three other bands (with you headlining, of course), who would you love to play with?

Hannah: Parquet Courts, Begonia, and Devendra Banhart. I think that would be a crazy lineup.

Sarah: Let’s go with Bad Buddy, Dinosaur Pile-Up and Peach Pit

From The Strait: What are your favourite – and least favourite – parts of being a musician?

Hannah: For me the best part is the variety: every day is super different and every project is dynamic and new. The worst part is the emails. There are so many emails.

Rob: The greatest and most frustrating part of being a musician is the same for me: gradually getting better. Playing in a band and improving your craft is a grind. There’s no end point, and every step after the beginner stage is slow and hard-earned. If you want to be a good musician, you have to come to terms with this and learn to love the process. I still have bad days where it feels like my limbs won’t cooperate. But thankfully, I’ve fallen in love with practice and I’ve learned to feel pride for showing up every day.

Sarah: My favorite part is the energy – connecting with a crowd, other musicians and the music – that rules. Least favorite is the admin stuff.

From The Strait: What’s the band’s songwriting process like? Is it different every time, or do you have a similar pattern for each song?

Hannah: The bulk of our writing happens in the room with the three of us together. Occasionally one of us will bring in a completed chart and the others will fill in their parts but more often Sarah will have a riff or a set of lyrics, or I’ll have a chord progression or vocal melody, and we’ll flesh out the texture and rough form all together.

From The Strait: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 4 albums would you want with you?

Hannah:
Graceland – Paul Simon
Depression Cherry – Beach House
Speaking In Tongues – Talking Heads
Maggot Brain – Funkadelic

Rob:
Lateralus – Tool
Toxicity – System of a Down
Take off your Pants and Jacket – blink-182
Songs for the Deaf – Queens of the Stone Age

Sarah:
Muse – Absolution
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours
Royal Blood – Royal Blood
Alabama Shakes – Sound and Colour
