GTA-based alt rock band Black Paint is swiftly making a name for themselves, becoming known for their rowdy live shows, big riffs, and black coverall uniforms. They’ve recently released a new single, “Pesticide,” so we caught up with the trio to chat about the new music, their influences, and what first made them want to start a band.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Pesticide”.

Black Paint: This song was produced by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Our Lady Peace) and mastered by Grammy award winning engineer Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Cage the Elephant). It’s about letting comfort keep you down while your dreams and ideas grow and grow. Not breaking bad habits and living with the regret of not following through.

From The Strait: How would you describe Black Paint to anyone who hasn’t heard your music before?

Black Paint: We are first and foremost a live band. A lot of our ideas come from just jamming in a room together, and our live set consists of a good amount of improv so no two shows are ever alike. We also add some acoustic and softer songs into our set which helps us stand out from other bands in our scene.

From The Strait: Who were your musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?

Black Paint: Our musical influences today are very similar to what they were growing up, band like The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against the Machine and many others gave us the inspiration to form a band and also continue to inspire us in many ways.

From The Strait: What first made you want to be a musician? Was it a song, an artist, or just an undeniable pull to make music?

Black Paint: It’s definitely a combination of many elements, a love of music and our friendship made us want to start a band and that continues to drive us to this day.

From The Strait: Describe each band member in one word.

Black Paint:
Steven: Creative
Tyler: Chill
Eric: Angry
