Bealby Point

Vancouver-based indie rock band Bealby Point have recently released a new single, “Fairytale,” a song about unrequited love and yearning for deeper connection. We caught up with band member Jack to chat about the new music,  his dream venue, and his deserted island albums.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “Fairytale”.

Bealby Point: Hi everybody! Jack here from Bealby Point! Our new song Fairytale is a melancholic tune about unrequited love and yearning for a deeper connection after a night out of drinking, fornicating, and disillusionment. What feels like love to one is just play and fun for the other. We all long for a Fairytale ending with true love’s first kiss and flowers and wedding bells, but often the reality is that this idealized relationship is only a fantasy. So, a bit of a bummer! The outro of the song finishes off with a more triumphant realization that love is still out there, and romance isn’t dead, you just need to find the right person.

From The Strait: Who were your musical influences growing up, and how do they differ from your current ones?

Bealby Point: When I was growing up, I listened to the music my parents were listening to, my Dad was really into 80’s new wave rock bands like The Smiths, Tears for Fears, and Modern English and I’ve grown to love that music even more as I’ve listened to it and understood it better. Each of us in the band have a wide variety of influences though across many genres from punk to country to metal music. The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Nirvana, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are the bands that really inspired me to start playing and writing music.

From The Strait: If you could play any music venue anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Bealby Point: I haven’t personally travelled and visited many renowned music venues around the world but if I had to pick somewhere to play, I think I’d pick The Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. It just looks so cool there, playing outdoors in the valley surrounded by the rocks with the sun setting behind I feel like would be an unforgettable experience.

From The Strait: What are your favourite and least favourite – things about being musicians?

Bealby Point: My favourite thing about being a musician is the creative fulfillment of being able to express yourself through your music and say what you want to say in your own unique way. Playing shows and having a crowd take in and enjoy your music is a real heartwarming feeling. My least favourite thing about being a musician is how expensive everything is.

From The Strait: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Bealby Point: My biggest highlight of our career so far would be our Western Canada tour we went on earlier this year in the Spring. We had only played outside of Vancouver a handful of times before the tour, and we’d never been on the road before so that experience of loading up the van and driving around playing shows for new people every night was really special. It came with its challenges as well but overall, it was amazing. We are planning a follow up tour right now for Spring of 2025 and we’re excited for that too so keep your eyes out for that!

From The Strait: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have 5 albums with you, what would you want them to be?

Bealby Point: I would take Room On Fire – The Strokes, Avenged Sevenfold – Avenged Sevenfold, Live 1969 – Simon and Garfunkel, Stadium Arcadium – The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Louder than Bombs – The Smiths
