Canadian artist Ash Molloy is back with her latest single, “nice to know you”. An anthemic and cathartic track, it invites listeners to collectively say goodbye to toxic ties and broken friendships. We caught up with Ash to chat about the new music, some differences between Newfoundland and Toronto, and her experience performing in an Urban Outfitters.

From The Strait: Tell us about the new single, “nice to know you”.

Ash Molloy: I wanted to write a song that was a bit cathartic for the whole audience. That’s why I chose an easy to remember lyric “nice to know you” that everyone can sing together. We’ve all had a breakup with a friend and for a lot of us it is shittier than a romantic relationship ending. I just wanted there to be a moment in my show where we can all relate to each other and do something together. Maybe it’ll be healing ? I dont know…but that’s the goal 🙂

From The Strait: Moving from Newfoundland to Toronto must have been a huge change. What are the most surprising differences, especially within the music scenes?

Ash Molloy:  You have public transit here, that was a big one for me. Musically it’s different because there’s so much of absolutely anything you could ever want to listen to. Newfoundland’s dominant genre is folk/traditional and every other genre has a pretty small (or non existant) community. It’s really nice to see so many different genres.

From The Strait: What are some of your favourite – and least favourite – parts of being a musician?

Ash Molloy:  Favourite part is performing, by far. I love every aspect of it. Planning, rehearsing, practicing, and of course the actual live show. Least favourite part is the unknown maybe. Nothing is guaranteed ever. It can lead to a lot of disappointment. But that’s all part of the ride.

From The Strait: If you could collaborate with any musician or band, who would it be and why?

Ash Molloy:  Hayley Williams. She’s doing it right.

From The Strait: What was the coolest (and/or weirdest) live show you’ve ever played?

Ash Molloy:  Recently, I played in an Urban Outfitters. I loved it so much. It felt like being in one of those old videos you see of your favourite band where they’re randomly playing in a mall or something. It was so cool.

From The Strait: Imagine you were selling out stadiums – what would you put on your rider?

Ash Molloy:  Cookies and milk, horrible for your throat but I don’t care.
