Based out of California, Follow Me Dark is a genre-blending alt rock band that created a sound that ranges from wailing metal riffs to intricate textural interludes, from melodic rock choruses to emotional breakdowns. They’ve just released their second LP, Far From Any Shore, a full-length concept album based on the Hero’s Journey writings of Joseph Campbell.

We set out to make an album the old-fashioned way, four players in a room, playing live, and weaving together a body of songs into a coherent listening experience,” says vocalist/guitarist Stephen Kozak. “This is an album for people who grew up listening to full albums.

The album kicks off with the mellow and grungy style of “The Spark”. Boasting a moody feel, gripping intensity, and gritty vocals, it offers a sound that encapsulates a very specific time in the early 90s. From there, the band dives into more of an upbeat rock sound with “Hounds of Heaven,” and then the huge guitar riffs and infectious melodies of “Aurora”. This one sounds like a rock radio hit with its big, punctuated moments and compelling hooks.

One of the songs that stands out most to me is “Acid Desert” – it’s simultaneously melancholic yet anthemic, with loads of depth and an edgy appeal. It has a dynamic style that gets heavier and then mellows out, ending with gorgeous backing vocals. “Oubliette” offers a sound that is haunting and raw, while “Twelve Trials” is heavier and riff-forward, with an earworm quality similar to Pantera’s “Walk”. The brooding and chaotic style of “Splinters” makes way for “Medusa,” led by guest vocals from Vanessa Boots, trading leads with Kozak. This song is mellow and moody, described perfectly by the band as “Portishead-in-a-roadhouse dirge”.

“Godhead” features ethereal vocals by Karnamrita Dasi and flamenco guitar by Miguel Padilla, creating a unique and captivating style. Then “Daffodils” brings a post-rock flair, “Straw Man” dials into grunge, and “Bedlam” corners a heavy and ominous sound, with explosive guitar and in-your-face vocals.

Another stand-out track is “Void Creek” with its subdued and emotional sound reminiscent of the heavy ballads of the 90s, featuring huge moments and a somewhat wistful feel. The album ends with its namesake, “Far From Any Shore”. Inspired by Muse, Floater, and Murder by Death, its dynamic shifts and nuanced moments make for an overall cinematic song. A huge finish to an incredible album.

Far From Any Shore is best served loud, listening to each track in the proper order. For optimal results, hit repeat and listen again.
