The Dirty Nil has just released their latest full-length album, The Lash. It’s an unrelenting, high-stakes rock record from a band that has spent over a decade tearing up stages, building a well-deserved worldwide following. For our latest Q&A with the band, we caught up with Kyle to chat about the new songs, the best- and worst- parts of touring, and the Nil’s pre-show rituals.
From The Strait: What can fans expect from the new batch of songs?
Kyle: This album is the Nil firing on all cylinders. There’s certainly a fresh sense of vulnerability all over the album and the songs go to some more emotional places than we have in the past.
From The Strait: If you had to pick a favourite song on the album, which would it be?
Kyle: “That Don’t Mean It Won’t Sting” is one of my favourites on the record. It’s short and sweet, very fun to play live and without a doubt one of the best songs Luke’s ever brought to the table.
From The Strait: The Nil is currently touring like crazy – what are the best and worst parts of touring?
Kyle: The best parts for me are experiencing new places and meeting new, interesting people. You always end up somewhere you would never have gone on your own and I really love that. Also if you ask for it they’ll give you a rotisserie chicken at every show.
The worst part of touring is long drives in show days. You get no sleep and you’re in the van all day long. The brain melts in the van.
From The Strait: How do you usually prepare for a show? Does the band have any pre-show rituals?
Kyle: I usually try and do some pushups, drum warm ups and a little stretching when I’m not feeling lazy. The other guys usually get a vocal warm up in before the show. We don’t really have much of a ritual. Usually we do a group hug, say we love each other and Luke gives us a little kiss on the head. Sometimes, I get a round of whiskey for everyone when we’ve had an exhausting few days for a little morale boost.
From The Strait: Which bands or artists are you listening to most right now?
Kyle: Right now I’m kind of all over the place. We listened to a biography about Led Zeppelin so that’s been in heavy rotation lately. Pink Floyd as well. But then I’ll also throw on Nails or Billy Woods or Deftones. Hotline TNT too.
